I regret to inform everyone that “Spike” our resident Bearded Dragon passed away early this afternoon. Ever since we rescued Spike in the summer of 2006 he has brought so much joy to not only me and the people who work with him on a daily basis but to the millions of people he has educated. Always an audience favorite, Spike would steal the show by bobbing his head up and down or doing his famous pushups.

Spike was always the perfect candidate to sit on people’s shoulders or even people’s heads! Here we are both pictured in the fall of 2006.

One of his favorite things to do was bask outside in his custom built habitat in the summer. Here he is doing what beardies’ do best: Flaring up! Anytime...

One of my favorite destinations that I have visited ever since I was a kid is Utah’s Hogle Zoo. This 42 acre zoological park is home to some of the world’s most incredible creatures. During a recent visit I was really impressed with their Elephant Encounter exhibit which is home to the zoo’s African Elephants and White Rhinos.

The Elephant Encounter exhibit is made up into four distinct yards. Each one of these yards provides the elephants and rhinos positive stimulus and enrichment. Elephants (whom are some of the most intelligent animals on earth) require constant activities to keep them happy and healthy.

This picture was taken by my phone. Check out how close you can get to the zoo’s gorgeous rhinos! It’s...

I just recently visited my old home in Robie Creek, Idaho. It’s amazing how much growing up in this small community influenced my passion for animals and how I decided to dedicate my life to them.

Behind me is the cabin my family and I lived in for nearly five years. The majority of my childhood was always spent up here in the mountains. Since I didn’t have any close friends for miles away I was always surrounded by all sorts of wildlife. I kept chickens, pigeons, ducks, pheasants, doves, a pot belly pig, and small lizards. I even would put on small “wildlife” shows for my family with the bugs and frogs I used to catch.

This is a picture of me and my Aunt Joyce back in the early 90’s with my first pet lizard named Booger. Booger was a Green Iguana...

One of my absolute favorite animals is the Spotted Hyena. These mysterious African creatures have been puzzling scientists and researchers for years. I recently found out five amazing facts about these mammals that I would like to share!

Number 5

Did you know that the Spotted Hyena is more closely related to a cat than a dog?

Number 4

Female Spotted Hyenas are larger than the males AND lead a matriarchal society (dominated by females). Females are also a lot more aggressive and assertive.

Number 3

Their bite is the strongest in the animal kingdom! Unlike most predators they prefer eating the bones and skin over meat. The only things they can’t digest are horns and fur BUT they still eat...

We just finished filming a segment with my three gorgeous emus Cosmo, Ernie, and Napoleon. It was the first time that my emus have EVER seen a camera crew and what can I say? It was an incredible experience! A lot of people know that I love my three birds to death…but what a lot of people DON’T know is that I have had a long history with my emus that started many years ago at an early age.

Ever since I can remember I have always been fascinated with emus. They always reminded me of “modern day dinosaurs.” The way they walk, the way they move, and the shape of their feet all resemble ancient creatures that once roamed this earth. Here at fifteen years old, I am pictured with Cosmo. He was just a little chick when we received him in June of 2005.

Considered one of the most recognizable if not one of the most celebrated animals in this century is the Polar Bear. These magnificent bears have captured the hearts of millions and have been a constant face in international documentaries, movies, magazines, and zoos. So why are scientists predicting that this majestic animal will be gone within a century?

For a while polar bears were constantly killed for trophies. Humans also moved into the polar bear’s habitat limiting the space that these large bears need. Fortunately many countries have set up hunting restrictions and have set aside land just for the bears.

Another factor affecting these bears is pollution. It contains high levels of chemicals that affect the bear’s immune system. Some of the effects include reproductive failure and malformed organs. They ingest the majority of the foreign chemicals from the seals they eat out in the wild that have been affected as well as the bears.

As a young child I always dreamed of meeting Jane Goodall. This incredible researcher and world-renowned primatologist has always inspired me to make a difference in this world one single step at a time. When I finally had the opportunity to meet Jane her talk really got me thinking…Who are the Great Apes?

Of course we all know about the famous Chimpanzees in Africa that Jane studied for so many years. She was the first researcher EVER to observe wild chimps using and manufacturing tools (like sticks and branches) to poke into termite mounds to collect the tasty morsels.

Don’t get confused…this is NOT a chimpanzee. This is a Bonobo. Bonobos are members of the Great Ape family and until recently most scientists considered...

We have all heard about the Komodo Dragon. The large mythical looking creatures that live only on a select group of islands in Indonesia. They even have earned the title as the world’s largest lizard growing up to 10 feet long and weighing in at over 300 pounds. There are facts though that many people don’t know about these misunderstood beasts. For an instance: Did you know inside that bulky head are over 60 short razor sharp teeth designed for tearing flesh? Or that they will go through four to five sets of teeth in a lifetime?

Did you know that in 2002 a research team found on a single island “mini dragons” that are much smaller than other dragons in Indonesia? These small dragons only reach 7 feet and weigh 47 pounds!

My recent trip to Oregon would not have been complete without visiting one of my favorite places in the WHOLE entire world...The Oregon Coast! There is just something about the cold waves of the Pacific, the rocky tide pools, and the washed up kelp that makes this place one of my favorite destinations. ***The picture above was taken in Lincoln City right behind The Sandcastle Motel (a place we would stay when I was a kid). Although I never did get a black belt in Karate I think I could give Jackie Chan a run for his money!

We drove along the coast and hit some of my favorite towns including Depot Bay the world's smallest harbor. Tourists around the world flock to Depot Bay to check out their famous Gray Whales. These whales have been visiting this place for generations and can be seen at the town's Whale Watching Center. ***Here...
